Our scauri print is inspired by the work of the much-loved potter Lucie Rie. Her modernist shapes were often decorated using sgraffito, a technique of layering two or more glazes onto a pot and then painstakingly scratching through the top layer to reveal fine lines of a contrasting glaze underneath.
Rie began using sgraffigo after visiting Avebury, Wiltshire in the late 1940s to look at the bronze age pottery and the bird bones which had been used to inscribe them.
Our print is hand blocked in india and replaces the fine needles used by Rie to inscribe the pots with string tightly wrapped around the wooden block and then dipped into ink.
